Welcome to Class 1's webpage!
Please bring a plastic bag into school in our last week so that the children can bring their work home.
We will need to collect in all of our reading scheme books in the last week of term so that we can reorganise the library during the summer holidays.
Our new Topic is "Beside the seaside". We will be looking at some of these points - and lots of other interesting facts too!

We have been talking about seasides and looking at photos of past and present seasides. How do you think seasides in the past looked different to modern day seasides?
Thursday 6th July
Class 1 (and Class 2's Year 1 children) were really lucky to have a multi-skills afternoon today, where we practised lots of different activities, along with several other schools. Have a look at us in action!
Thursday 15th June
This week in maths we have been practising counting, recognizing numbers and ordering them, as well as counting in 2s, 5s and 10s! We have also been busy in our outdoor area, writing invitations to a picnic, doing a sandwich vote (ask us which our favourite sandwich is!), making shopping lists and other activities inspired by our book "The Lighthouse Keeper's Lunch".
Thursday 8th June
We have been exploring different symbols in RE week. We have been looking at special symbols in a synagogue and in a church. We have made Torah scrolls, and the star of David. We have made fish, using pipe cleaners and beads, and decorated doves by finger painting. We think they look fantastic! Come and have a look at them on display in our class!

Monday 22nd May
Today we had a very busy day learning and we welcomed our friends from Class 2 into our classroom and outdoor area too! We all had a go at lots of different activities all about the life cycle of a butterfly.
We saw something pretty amazing too! We found some HUGE moths on a log in our digging pit! Look at the size of them! Mrs. Unwin put them on her hand and let us all have a closer look at them. Mrs Unwin is going to research what type of moth they were and let us know!
Thursday 18th May
Finally some sunshine for Wild Week! We had such a great day at the Chestnut Centre today, and we saw lots of wildlife - including giant otters, deer, a fox, squirrels, and lots of varieties of owls, including a spectacled owl. Thank you to our guide Jenny and to all of our helpers who also came along.
Thursday 11th May
Fun and learning in the sun! In our outdoor area we have been looking for mini beasts, practising instructional language, learning phonics, designing and building houses (linked to our Topic) and much more!
Thursday 4th May
We went on a field trip around Longstone, exploring our local area. We looked at lots of different places, including the church, Sally B's, Isla's farm and the cricket pavilion. We listened carefully to what we could hear, and we even met a lady at the bus stop who told us she was waiting for the bus to Tideswell! We learnt what amenities our local area has got. Which do you think our favourite place was?
In computing we are using Scratch Jr to learn to code. It is a free app which you can download onto your tablet if you want to practise at home.
In maths we used our outdoor area to practise making symmetrical patterns. Have a look at us in action!
Thursday 27th April
Class 1 used our mapping skills to find our class teddies which were hidden around school today. Take a look at us!
We have been spending money! £££! We have been using coins to work out different prices, and using our role play garden centre to buy different things for our imaginary garden.

Thursday 6th April
We have really enjoyed our RE week so far. Class 1 have been learning all about Palm Sunday and what happened. We have done other Easter activities too, so have a look at us!
Thursday 30th March
In school today we were lucky enough to have Inspector Smart in for a special assembly.
We have been building Egyptian pyramids from Lego and preparing our stick men for becoming Egyptian mummies.
Friday 24th March - Egyptian Day / Red Nose Day
Wow, we looked fantastic today! A big well done to all our superstars for dressing up. We have been very creative, making our own Egyptian headbands and using our fine motor skills to thread necklaces. We have also been decorating red noses and designing our own red noses. What a lot of fun!

In maths we have been talking this week about measuring - lengths, heights, volume and capacity! Take a look at us in action.
Thursday 16th March
We have been learning about 2D and 3D shapes this week. We have had fun using cocktail sticks and marshmallows to make our own shapes, and recognising everyday objects' 3D shapes.
Thursday 9th March
Class 1 have been enjoying the sunshine in our outside area today. We have been digging, making potions, balancing and exploring!
In maths we have been practising our dividing. Have a look at some of us working out sharing and dividing.
Thursday 2nd March
We have had such a fantastic World Book Day! Class 1 looked fantastic in their costumes. Check us out!
We read Julia Donaldson's "Room on the Broom", and we had fun making our own wands. I wonder what spells we might cast with our wands!
Thursday 23rd February
We have been thinking about stories in the Bible. Look at our lovely Moses display with our woven cribs for baby Moses.
We have also been discussing the Good Samaritan. We have enjoyed sequencing the parable, cutting out masks, and acting out the story. We have also been talking about what makes a good friend, and how we can be a good friend to others.
Thursday 9th February
We have loved our topic on Space! To top it all off, on Monday we had an exciting time in the planetarium in the hall (thanks very much FOLS!).
Have a look at our wonderful Neil Armstrong display with our painted footprints. We think they look great!
To celebrate the end of our Topic of Space this half term, all of Class 1 were presented with an important certificate!
Thursday 2nd February
"One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind."
Who said this famous saying?
Look at us creating our own footprints, just like Neil Armstrong did when he landed on the moon! Having our feet painted was very ticklish! Keep a look out on here for more photos of our footprints when the paint has dried.
Tick tock tick tock,,,,, Class 1 have been learning about the time. We have used lots of clocks to show different times, and we also made our own clocks which are now on display in our class!
In Design Technology, we have designed our own alien spaceships. Look at how we have decorated them. We think they look out of this world!
Thursday 26th January
Class 1 have had such fun learning this week. We have been practising our fractions in maths (half), and creating our own aliens. What would your alien be called? We have even dressed up as astronauts!
It is the Chinese New Year this weekend. Look at us making Chinese money envelopes, lucky fish and Chinese cone characters.
Thursday 19th January
Have you ever tasted space food? Class 1 have! Have a look to see if you would like to try some!
We loved acting out the story "Whatever Next" by Jill Murphy. We used a box, some wellies, a colander, a teddy bear, some food and our imaginations!
We have been getting better at our adding this week, and we showed our skills when playing the Magic Cauldron game.
Thursday 12th January
We have been learning about Tim Peake! We even watched a video of him blasting off into space! We made our own fact files about Tim Peake and thought of questions we would like to ask an astronaut. What question might you ask?
We have also been practising our addition, using unifix cubes, and our number bonds to 10 and 20. Our Class 1 penguins have been helping us. Look at some of our pictures from this week!
Thursday 5th January
Happy new year and welcome back to school. We hope you had a lovely break.
We have been enjoying our new Space topic this week. We also have a brand new set of challenges on our Challenge Tree - come and take one home! We have been playinjg in our space station, pretending to be astronauts, making plasticene aliens and painting planets for our class display.
It has been great fun playing outside, trying to break the ice in our garden, counting with our counting sticks, constructing and making checklists. Brrrrrr!

On Monday 19th December Class 1 will be having our Christmas party. Each child has a letter explaining what food they need to bring in. Please label any containers that you send in to school.

Thursday 15th December
Class 1 and Class 2 have worked tremendously hard over the last few weeks, practiskng the "Wriggly Nativity". We are so proud of them - well done!
For a special treat to say well done for all their hard work, Class 1 brought in a cuddly toy from home as a "film buddy" and we enjoyed spending the afternoon relaxing and watching a film. Have a look at us!
Thursday 8th December
Christmas is fast approaching and Class 1 and 2 have been really busy practising for our Nativity which is next week (2pm and 6pm on Wednesday in the Church). We are looking forward to seeing you there!
Here are a few photos of what we have been up to this week. We have been building and constructing, discussing the Christmas story and the main events, improving our fine motor skills and recognising and ordering numerals - and lots of other things!
Thursday 1st December
We have had a very busy Decoration Day. Class 1 have made some wonderful creations which are now hanging in and around Class 1. Maybe you will see them when you come to the FOLS Christmas bazaar tomorrow (from 3.30pm). Many thanks to all the helpers who came in today to give us a helping hand!
Class 1's Christmas hamper is RED! Find it just inside our classroom, under the coat pegs. All donations are very gratefully received.
Thursday 24th November
We have been very busy this week. Here are some of the activities we have been doing! They include sounding out and blending words, fishing for our phonics, building big towers, designing transient art and practising writing our numbers. Some of the Year 1 children even auditioned for the CBeebies show Stargazing!
Friday 18th November
Class 1 painted their own Pudsey Bears today because it is Children in Need Day. They are fantastic!
Thursday 17th November

Last week we were being creative, looking forward to Bonfire Night. We made our own firework and bonfire paintings!We have displayed lots of them on our classroom so come and have a look!
We have been practising our phonics, jumping on each sound then trying to blend them together.

What beautiful autumn weather we are having! We have been outside using our new construction area - have a look at us!

Thursday 20th October 2016
We have been busy decorating our biscuits for our own Tiger Tea party. Look at how they turned out!
We have been looking at 2D and 3D shapes this week. See some of our discovering and learning.
We have made book bag charms to sell after our Harvest service tomorrow. We worked really hard threading all of the beads and tying the knots. It was tricky work but we think they look great!
We have been exploring our outside area, looking for lots of different signs of Autumn, balancing, and rolling the vehicles down hill.

We have been looking at the story "The Tiger who Came to Tea". We have enjoyed writing our own invitations to tea. We have also been using our fantastic new rug (thank you FOLS) to practise our numbers and letters. See some of us either showing the first letter in our name or showing our age!

We have been been very busy during our RE week: we have talked about our own special places, we have shown each other our special places around school and we have a Gem Jar in our reflection area where we can put a gem each time we think about someone who is sad or poorly.

Reception - update!
Date: 12th May.
We are now going to be sending out spellings for each reception child in Class 1 on Fridays which is in line with the rest of the school. These spellings will correspond to the sounds and words that we have covered during the week’s phonics sessions. The number of spellings that your child receives will depend on the group that they are in, and the number may also vary from week to week depending on the difficulty of the words.
