Accelerated Reader
Click the button below to take you to our Accelerated Reader page where you can enter your log in details (on your bookmark) and take a quiz.
Please remember to only take a quiz on a book that you have finished reading by yourself or has been read to you within the last week. The best time to take a quiz is within 24 hours of finishing it! Please note - failed quizzes will not be deleted so make sure you know the book well before taking the quiz. |
Y4 Maths Project
While the Y5's got on with a special project with Mrs Mizon, the Y4's had their own project to do with Miss Martin (who just couldn't keep herself away). The task was to create a scale model of the school. The children had to use accurate measuring skills while finding the perimeter of each room. They then had to scale their measurements down after rounding them to fit on squared paper. The next job was to create nets of each room and decorate them appropriately before arranging them in the right places.

Y5 Project
The year 5's have got stuck in to a special project that they will be part of into next year. The Archbishop of York Youth Trust, Young Leaders Award is presented by a character called 'Archie B'.
During the award the Y5 children will learn about key leadership skills and have practical opportunities to volunteer and help others in their community. |
More pictures and info to come but here are a few of the things we've been up to so far:
English
In English this half term, we started off by learning about Earth Day. We researched about climate change and had a debate, discussing whether we should make a change or not.
This has led us to be inspired to ask Mrs Harvey if we can do something in school. We have sent persuasive letters to her and are awaiting a reply.

Science
In science this half term, we have been learning about rocks. We have learnt about the different types of rock, how they are made and we have investigated their properties.
RE Week - Easter
This week, we have been learning about the events that happened on the first Good Friday. We have learnt about the crucifixion of Jesus and his last words on the cross.
In lessons, we have explored what the Bible calls ‘sin’ and understand the sacrifice that Jesus made to help people cross the divide between them and God.

Goodbye Mr Butler and Miss Martin
For their last day at Longstone our student teachers were really put to the test having to complete a 'grueling' teacher challenge: tying shoe laces, writing bump notes and marking work. We all had lots of fun watching, but most importantly we want to wish Mr Butler and Miss Martin good luck on their journey to becoming fully fledged teachers.
Haikus and Cinquains
In English, we have been writing our own poetry inspired by our Egyptian topic. We wrote and performed haikus and cinquains which are written using a certain number of syllables per line.

Thank you Miss Martin!
It is almost time for Miss Martin's last day with us in class 4. We wish her lots of luck in the future and hope she will visit soon! Have a look at all the wonderful things she has done with us for our Egyptian topic:
Where has the sun gone?
While our year 5 girls were enjoying a basketball competition, the rest of us enjoyed the sunshine down on the rec. Our first game of Danish longball of the season was lots of fun!
Crazy Creatures Competition!
As part of our homework last week, we were set the challenge of writing a mini saga (100 word story) to enter in the Young Writers' competition.
We spent a lesson discussing and creating our very own creative creature to include in our story. We thought about the creatures appearance, characteristics and any magical powers they may have. We then planned our mini saga.
So far we have had some brilliant entries in!

Tutanhkamun's Death Mask
This week in art we used pastels to create some fantastic pieces of art based on Tutanhkamun's death mask.
We looked carefully at the detail on the image we were drawing and focussed on correctly proportioning the face and mask. |
|
World Book Day
We had a brilliant day for World Book Day, look at some of our costumes:
Who were the Ancient Egyptians?
In guided reading recently we have been asking and answering each other's questions about the Egyptians.
It have been a really great activity where we have been working on our questioning skills, using appropriate key word searches using online search engines and retrieval of non-fiction information. |
Solid, liquid or gas?
In science, we have been learning about states of matter.
We have explored different materials and discussed their properties to determine whether they are a liquid or solid. We had lots of discussion about these! What do you think? Are these materials solid or liquid? Do any of them fit into both categories? Can you explain why?
|
Here we are investigating gas. How much does gas weigh? Why was it harder to squash the bottle with the lid on? How can a smell travel to our nose?
Egyptian myths
In English, we have been listening to, re-telling and comparing Egyptian myths. Through these myths we have learnt the Egyptian Creation Story and about lots of Egyptian Gods.
Here we are using role play to help us understand the story of Osiris and Isis.

Mummification
We couldn't have an Ancient Egypt topic without learning about the gruesome process of mummification! Can you remember what the Egyptians did? Which organs were taken out of the body? Were any kept in the body? Why?
Watch this space for more information about our experiment where we are attempting to mummify apples!

RE Week
For RE week we considered the question: 'Why is the Bible so important for Christians today?' We took part in lots of discussions about things that were important to us and others. Here we are during 'circle time' and working collaboratively to come up with lots of ideas:
During the week we explored the Bible a little more and also learnt about the Qur'an, the Muslim holy book. We finished the week by creating our own special class book, with ideas and thoughts about friendship, family, school, the community and environment.
We are artists!
For our space topic, we explored the work of Peter Thorpe who created abstract images in acrylic often with a space themed object in the foreground. We were inspired to create our own. Take a look at our wonderful work in progress:

National Space Centre Trip
We had a brilliant time at the National Space Centre. Here are a few pics:

Merry Christmas Mr Unwin
Last half term, we were inspired by Mr Unwin's brilliant poetry and created our own 'Anthology of Weather Poems'. Rather belatedly, he received his present but responded in true Mr Unwin fashion, with a poem of his own:
A thank-you Poem By Mr. Unwin Class Four. Thank you for your book of poems Ta very, very, very, very, very much! I'm really proud you thought of me I'm very, very, very, very, very touched! I read them all from first to last The middle ones too, you know The poems about the wind and rain And those about the snow. Reading and writing poems is fun - I'm sure you'll all agree So keep on reading and writing 'Til you're old and grey like me! Don't tell anyone I said so The other would say it's not cool But Class Four is the bestest class In all of Lonstone School! |

Topic
We are really getting stuck into our new topic - 'Space'! Here we are collecting information about all the planets in our Solar System. Watch this space to see glimpses of our big project for this half term.
Maths
In maths we have been exploring square and cube numbers. We drew and made the numbers and created posters to display our learning.
We found patterns in the multiplication square and some of us investigated the pattern between the difference of consecutive square numbers. Here are our cube numbers and calculations: |
We had fun investigating these numbers practically.
Art
In art this week we looked really closely at pictures of the planets in our Solar System and tried to replicate them using chalk pastels.
Party Time!
We had a brilliant party afternoon with lots of dancing, air guitar (and drums) games, prizes and of course party food! Thank you for all your donations.
We had a wonderful couple of days getting into the festive spirit. I'm sure you'll agree our classoom looks brilliant adorned with all our Christmas decorations, cards and calendars. Thank you so much to all the adults who came in to help the day run so smoothly!
The children did a fantastic job at the Advent Concert and everyone enjoyed the Christmas bazaar! |

Science
In science this half term we have been learning about forces. We are currently on a task force to help a team of scientists with a meterorite that has landed on Earth!
Here we are investigating the 'best' parachute for the team to land slowly and safely at the sight of the meterorite.
We each chose a different variable to investigate:

History
Before writing our newspaper reports on The Battle of Hastings. We needed to conduct an interview and collect some quotes. Here is the class interviewing William of Normandy himself! (Tommy played a brilliant King Will, in this hot-seating activity)

We also had a visit from our wonderful caretaker Mr Unwin who recited a fantastic poem written by Marriott Edgar, depicting the Battle of Hastings as a football match. He really is very clever to have remembered it all off by heart. Click this link to read it for yourself!
Science
We finished our topic on digestion with an experiment to see which liquids did the least damage to our teeth. We chose 6 different liquids and put hard boiled eggs (the shell is quite similar to the enamel on our teeth) in them to see what happened after a few days.
We finished our topic on digestion with an experiment to see which liquids did the least damage to our teeth. We chose 6 different liquids and put hard boiled eggs (the shell is quite similar to the enamel on our teeth) in them to see what happened after a few days.
Here are the results after 4 days:
We were suprised to find the orange juice has begun to dissolve the egg shell. The blackcurrant cordial was beginning to do the same! We found the egg in cola has brown sticky residue on it which was hard to rub off, the coffee was stained darker and the milk and water were unchanged.
We had heard that vinegar could also dissolve the eggshell and were interested to see what would happen, so we added an extra egg after a day in vinegar. After only 3 days the shell had been completely dissolved! |

Maths - Formal Methods
Over the next couple of weeks we will be focusing on formal written methods for addition and subtraction. We know that sometimes we learn how to do things in slightly (or sometimes, totally) different ways to the way people at home learnt.
*Mrs Mizon* - A fantastic way to show that you understand how to do these methods is to teach other people how to do it. Here are some examples to help (click on the image to open a larger version)

History
This week in our English and topic lesson we have been looking at the Bayeux Tapestry as a source of evidence to learn about the lead up to the Battle of Hastings. We know though, that the tapestry could show a one-sided view of the battle!

Getting into character as journalists, we also considered the Anglo-Saxon side of the story as we received breaking news of the battle and created headlines for reports going back to the Norman families in France as well as the Anglo-Saxon noble men and women in England.
Hit the Button
We've been playing an old favourite in maths this week. Hit the button is great for practising times tables, number bonds and division facts.
Challenge yourself and make it harder by searching for the questions instead of the answers.
'Hit the Button' is available as a paid for app on apple or android (£2.29), or you can just click on the picture here to play an online version for free!

RE Week
Our question for RE week was 'can religions help to build a fair world?'
We spent a lot of time talking about what 'fair' is. Mrs Mizon shared a quote with us, but we though it needed changing slightly, so this is our version! We learnt about how different faith-based charities support anybody all over the world who needs help and aim to get rid of poverty. The biggest success of the week though (according to Mrs Mizon) was when we considered what we would do if we could change the world! We came up with lots of different ideas and were allowed to express them in any way we wanted! Here we are explaining our inspiration to our classmates. |

Disgusting Digestion!
This week we have had great fun in science recreating the human digestive system out of household items. We have learnt the scientific names for each part, and their specific function. Who knew a banana and a digestive biscuit could be so gross!
Horrible Histories
We had our trip to Buxton Opera House on Tuesday to watch Horrible Histories, Barmy Britain. We learnt about lots of crazy characters from British history, from Boudicca to Queen Victoria. It was great to get involved, sing along and see one of our pupils on stage! Luckily, he was cured of the bubonic plague and was able to join us again to watch the rest of the show.

Happy Roald Dahl Day!
We have really enjoyed getting stuck in to lots of Roald Dahl related activities today. The Roald Dahl challenges in maths were a particular hit! In English we have been coming up with our own fizzbopping words and planning wondercrump stories about fantastical dreams, taking inspriation from both the BFG story and the new film.

Week 1!
This week has been all about getting to know our new class 4 family. Here we are trying our hand at a challenge where we had to work together to solve it using only four bits of string and a rubber band (we were not allowed to touch the cups with anything else!):
