Dahl Class
Miss Brocklehurst & Mrs Bright

Our whole school topic this half term is Seeds of Change.

As a class we are discussing the small changes that we could make to reduce the amount of waste that we produce as we explore "the three rs":

Happy New Year 新年快乐 (xīn nián kuài lè)

We joined forces with Dahl class this week to celebrate Chinese New Year. For our new year celebrations we invited some very important people in our school - our governors. We prepared, cooked (and taste tested) some lovely egg fried rice and got the opportunity to show off our hard work and knowledge about China. We ended by performing the Chinese New Year song that we have been learning in music lessons.

Art

In art this half term we have been learning about art made with paper. We started by exploring different types of paper. We then made a collage and finished by creating a papier-mâché sculpture of a zodiac animal. Here we are painting our works of art.

China
We have loved learning lots of new facts about China. We have learnt which continent it's in, its largest cities and rivers, its population, climate and special landmarks. We are making special books to share all our knowledge with you! Watch this space...

Chinese Restaurant
We have had lots of fun in our role play area this half term - making and serving Chinese dishes.

Look who was so inspired - they made their own Chinese food from scratch at home.
Mmmmm it looks delicious!

Dahl Class get a delivery!
Picture
We were excited to receive a package on the first morning of our new 'China' topic. We wondered what magic these paintbrushes might do! So we thought we would paint some things to find out!
Picture
No matter how much 'magic' we sprinkled on our paintings, nothing seemed to happen, so we went back to class to listen to a story about a real 'Magic Brush'.
However, we though we would have one more look before playtime, once the paintings had dried, just to check. To our amazement, the things we had painted were there in real life! Our favourite was the giant teddy bear, which now wears the chinese hat that we painted!

Decoration Day 2018

Huge thank you to all the parents who came to help out for a very successfully glittery decoration day. Without your help it just wouldn't be half as much fun (and smooth...and tidy afterwards!).

Shape

In maths we have been exploring 2D and 3D shapes. We have learnt that corners on 2D shapes are called vertices and have been practising labeling and describing all sorts of shapes.

All about blood

We have been learning all about what blood is made from. Can you explain the different jobs of each part of blood?

Talk for Writing

There has been a lot of technical language in our latest talk for writing text. We have learnt that we can find out the meaning of words like this in a glossary.

Look at Emily's fantastic home learning! She learnt all about her internal organs.

Remembrance Day

We made our own poppies for Remembrance Day. We spent a special time taking them down to the cross just infront of school and remembering the people who fought during the World Wars.

What's inside our body?

We had a fun session using our "Virtuali-Tee" to see inside our bodies. We also looked in information books and explored our hospital role play.

Our Body

We were put to the test straight away to show what we already know about what is inside our body. Miss Brocklehurst was very impressed with all the children's fantastic explanations!

RE Week

In our first RE week of the year, we thought about the Christian Creation story. We started by considering the importance of rest and calm after being so busy, like a 'busy machine'. Here some of us are making our own 'busy machine' to a piece of music called "Short Ride in a Fast Machine".

Art

Our collages are almost ready to construct. Our ships and background are finished and we have started to paint our sails. We learnt how to create different shades of the same colour by adding and white or black. We then carefully painted our sails to make them look 3D!

Anyone not fed up of Baby Shark yet??  Dahl Class certainly still love it!

Counting in 2s, 5s, 10s and 3s!

In maths we have been practising counting on and back in 2s, 5s, 10s and 3s. We are now fantastic at describing sequences that can start on any number!
Have a look at our counting in 2s, 5s and 10s numberlines which we helped Miss Brocklehurst to make!

This fun video from Mr DeMaio on YouTube is a fantastic way to practise counting in 3s! Join in with the chorus to the tune of Uptown Funk!

Science

In science this half term we have been learning about the seasons.
Picture
We have talked about what we can see in the different seasons and the changes that happen including daylight hours.

We have moved on to discussing "What is weather?" and this week, we have started to monitor the changing weather using our DIY weather station.

Art

In art this half term we have been working on a multi-media collage. So far we have explored lots of different ways of painting with water colour including wax resist, blending and splattering!

Here are some of our seascapes so far:

Next we have been working on our dragon ship. We carefully sketched out the ship in pencil, designing our own dragon for the prow and tail for the stern. We used patterns and colour to decorate our ship and of course the Viking shields on the side. We will be finishing off the wood with water colour paint later.

Talk For Writing

We are enjoying our first Talk for Writing text - The Magic Porridge Pot. We have drawn our own story map and practised retelling the story with actions.

We love working together...

...especially in maths. Here we are on Roald Dahl Day, solving some problems involving the characters from those famous stories!

Where did the Vikings come from?

We enjoyed looking closely at the Atlases to find the Scandinavian countries where the Vikings came from.

"We know that they must have been cold because they are so far away from the equator!"

Code Breakers

In our topic lessons, we have been learning about Viking runes. Here we are trying to write our name and send messages to our friends.
We've even created some of our own rune stones out of Plasticine!

Viking Books

We have loved finding Viking books in our book corner and at home. So far we have loved reading and looking at:
