Maths

Intent

At Longstone CE Primary School, teachers nurture assured, curious and resilient mathematicians who are able to rise to the challenges of the subject.

Knowledge of mathematics is key to life and we aim to ignite enthusiasm, independence and creativity in all mathematicians across the curriculum through engaging and hands-on activities.

A mastery approach to learning has been adopted by following the White Rose schemes of learning, allowing children of all abilities to shine as confident mathematicians in school and on into the future.

Implementation

Planning

Picture
We use the National Curriculum as a scaffold for planning the children's learning. Learning is carefully structured using White Rose Maths to ensure children explore key concepts in detail using concrete resources and pictorial representations to support them in their learning.

Teaching

We teach the children through engaging and practical activities with an aim to inspire fascination and enjoyment. We teach through a range of different media and learning styles suited to all learning preferences.

Impact

By recognising the power of collaboration on problem solving activities, students develop respect for each other and their opinions whilst learning from each other at the same time.

By promoting and praising effort and hard-work, teachers strengthen the self-esteem and boost the self-confidence of the children in their classes.

Through the use of mathematical, logical reasoning, children are able to consider the consequences of particular decisions and choices, giving them the confidence to question, investigate, prove and explain.

Assessment

We assess the children's learning against the key objectives for each year group using learning objective 'Milestone' statements.

Assessment is also carried out following the White Rose assessments at the end of each block and at the end of each term.
