Wellbeing
As we spend more time indoors over the coming weeks, it is important to remain as active as possible and to keep our wellbeing focussed on. Below is a link to Mrs Reeves' fantastic webpage, which will be updated with tasks and activities to ensure our wellbeing remains high. |
SeesawSeesaw is an app that we use in class to upload pictures of work. It is also used to record progress in practical subjects. Finally, it is a place where tasks can be set for children to use.
I've sent home a login code (alphanumerical and QR) that can be used to access our Seesaw page for children to be able to upload any work whilst they are not at school. If you need your code replacing, please email me on the dedicated corona email address and I shall send you the code electronically. |

Jump-start your Morning
For a change - why not check out Jumpstart Johnny online. The exercises are about 4 minutes long - I particularly like SHAKE IT UP by Taylor Swift.
Why not kick-start your mornings with Joe Wicks (The Body Coach)? He is streaming a live PE session from 9am to wake us all up. Use the link below to access his videos.
Are you more interested in dance? Why not take a look at Oti Mabuse's Youtube channel from 11.30am for a dance class? There are also free Just Dance videos on Youtube, which can be used for brain breaks.
Please be mindful of adverts whilst on Youtube!

Class Timetable
I have had a few parents ask about a weekly/daily timetable. Our timetable changes daily/weekly and it is not always the same. But below is an example of a timetable, that you are more than welcome to use, if you feel it is helpful. There is no expectation to follow this at all!

Key Skills
Times Tables
Multiplication skills form a fundamental basis for mathematical operations. To secure your knowledge of the times tables will help you for future learning and make it easier for you to learn new strategies. Over the next few weeks, take time to consolidate and cement your skills by using the online resources. |
Baking
To be able to bake is a life skill that you will use well into adulthood. I have seen some of your delicious food for the World War 2 topic. Over the next 2 weeks, I would like you to try to make a cake of your choice - lemon drizzle, chocolate or even a brownie tray bake . Post your photos on seesaw so I can see your delicious results. It will be like Masterchef online! |
A massive thank you from all of us to you on International Day of Families...

Monday 4th May
This week we are focusing on marking the 75th VE Day anniversary by learning all about wartime Britain and the meaning behind VE Day. VE Day (Victory in Europe Day) is the day on which Allied forces formally announced the surrender of Germany, which brought the Second World War to a close in Europe.
There will be lots of hands on activities on here and Seesaw, so please don't feel you need to complete them all over the next two days, as they are designed to be spaced out over the week. I can't wait to see lots of your creations and photos on Seesaw or by email!
Friday 8th May will mark the official celebration and hopefully, our activities will build-up to allow you to celebrate as a family and join in with the national idea of a celebration picnic or afternoon tea (see the poster below).

VE Day 2020 Longstone Video
We thought it would be a really fitting keepsake of the 75th anniversary of VE Day for all the Longstone family to sing the iconic song 'We'll Meet Again ' by Vera Lynn. In order to make this a success, we need each child or siblings together to learn the song below using the lyrics and then record themselves singing the song on Seesaw or another device and send via email to their class teacher. Individual videos will then be compiled to create a joint masterpiece! Have fun singing!
We need all videos to be sent by Wednesday 6th May, so editing can take place. Hopefully, the finished video will be shared with you all on our Facebook/Website.

Swing Dance
During the 1940s, swing dance was really popular, so it would be fitting this week to learn a dance ready to share with your family on Friday. Maybe your whole family could learn the dance with you, as part of your weekly exercise.
Watch the video below and learn the dance moves over the week. If you are able to share, I'd love to see some videos of your dance moves on Seesaw!

Something Different - A Wishing Bowl (Fun for all the family!)
Why not make something memorable to remind you of this unusual time in our lives? I found this simple 'wishing bowl' activity, which you could mark with your name and 2020. Once dried, you could also fill the bowl with wishes of all the things you plan to do after lockdown.

Instructions to Make a Papier-mâché Wish Bowl
For this challenge, you will be using a bowl as an armature (mold) to make a “Wishing Bowl.”
This challenge includes two different instructions for making papier-mâché paste. The first recipe uses flour as the base & a second recipe is gluten-free, using only white glue & water.
As your bowl fills with daily or weekly wishes, what fun it will be to unveil those wishes & carry them out once lockdown is lifted.
Papier-mâché Paste: Flour & Water Recipe
The ratio for glue should 3/4 white glue to 1/4 water. If you are using a high quality glue such as Elmer’s Glue-All, you can mix ½ glue to ½ water.

Papier-mâché Paste: Flour & Water Recipe
- Glass, plastic or ceramic bowl; approximately the size of a soup bowl
- Aluminum foil or plastic wrap
- Large mixing bowl
- Spoon
- Whisk
- All-purpose white flour
- Hot water from tap (not boiling)
- Optional: Colored papers or tissue paper, white copy paper, acrylic paint
- Cover outside of bowl with aluminum foil or plastic wrap. Optional: spray lightly with cooking spray to make the removal of the completed bowl easier.
- Tear or cut strips of newspaper approximately 1” wide. The length of each strip should not be longer that the diameter of the bowl.
- Mix one part flour to one part water (1 cup of flour to 1 cup of water) and stir well in the mixing bowl with a spoon until it is smooth. Use the whisk to remove any remaining lumps in the paste. The paste should be as thin as pancake batter or thick glue-like consistency. If the paste seems too thick, you can add more water, a little at a time. Mix more paste as needed for your project. Dip the strips of newspaper into the paste. Wipe the strip so it is not dripping wet and apply it to the outside of the bowl over the foil or plastic wrap.
- Repeat this process with the newspaper strips, laying them in different directions until the outside of the bowl is covered. If the strips extend past the bowl, they can be trimmed once the bowl has dried.
- Continue the process until you have added three layers of paper. Allow to dry before adding more layers. If the bowl appears too thin, you can add three more layers.
- If you do not want to paint your bowl, you can add color and design by applying one final layer of decorative papers to the surfaces of the bowl with the flour and water paste.
- Acrylic paint works best for painting your bowl. For inspiration, click here for images of papier-mâché bowls.
- Your bowl is now ready to leave your wishes – papers can be rolled and tied with a string.
The ratio for glue should 3/4 white glue to 1/4 water. If you are using a high quality glue such as Elmer’s Glue-All, you can mix ½ glue to ½ water.

If you haven't already created a diary during lockdown, can you create at least two diary entries over the next two days explaining your thoughts, feelings, activities etc? This is an unusual time and it will be remembered for years to come, so it is only fitting that we create a piece of writing to remember this time. It would be great to see your diary entries uploaded to Seesaw too. |

Task 1: There are lots of people, who are helping us, during this time. It may be the NHS staff, our parent(s) or a shop keeper but wouldn't it be lovely to show them some appreciation and design and write a card to them to say a massive 'THANK YOU' for all their continued hard work. So your first task is to design and write a card to say THANK YOU to someone of your choice. |
Task 2: Due to current situation, there are lots of people we can't spend time with at the moment. However, it would be lovely if you could write them a letter to let them know you are thinking of them and to tell them what you have been doing. You might even want to write a letter to the whole class to keep in touch and if you upload it to Seesaw, I will share it with them.

Our theme this week is linked to Easter, symbols and Spring. Here is a song to support this theme.
Spellings
This week's spelling focus is: word families. Here are ten spellings that should be practised this week: solve, solution, insoluble, dissolve, solvent, sign, signature, assign, design and signal.
Task: Try one of the fun outdoor spelling ideas, whilst we have the chance to go out in the garden/yard. Choose from the three options:
1) Write the spellings on individual pieces of paper. Place the pieces of paper outside (hold down with a stone, if needed) or pin them on a washing line. Throw a soft ball or beanbag at the spelling and say each individual letter out loud.
2) Write the above spellings on a hard surface outside using a paintbrush or stick and water.
3) Write the above spellings on a hard surface outside using chalk.

I loved looking at your vocabulary banks, which you posted online. Here are some of the fantastic ideas you came up with:
lovable kitten with ginger fur
pink flowers with lush green stems
baby-blue butterfly with shimmering white patterns
rich grass with glistening reflections
charcoal mole with sharp claws
dazzling daffodils with fragile petals
Over the next two days, your task is to create your own descriptive poem using the phrases you have already created. You only need about 5 lines. If you are looking for inspiration, why not sit outside in your garden to write.
Here is an example:
Spring Garden Poem
The lovable kitten with ginger fur bounces through the lush green grass.
The baby-blue butterfly with shimmering white patterns dances across the sky.
A charcoal mole with sharp claws pokes it's head above the muddy ground.
Some dazzling daffodils with fragile petals wave hello to the Spring morning.
Pink flowers with lush green stems open their petals to greet the glorious sun.
Spring has arrived.

Task 1) This half term, we have been using coding to create a memory game using Scratch. The task is to complete this game over the next week. Log in to Seesaw and you will find a post titled 'Memory'. Please open this and complete the stages by following the instructions. You will also need to log in to Scratch. The children need to use the log in details for Morpurgo's class area on Scratch, which they should remember but if not, please email me using the Corona email address and I will get back to you. The children already have a memory game started on the shared Morpurgo area. |
