Welcome to Morpurgo's webpage!

Mrs. Shimwell and Mrs. Robinson are your teachers.  Keep an eye on our webpage as we will update it with news and photos of what we have been up to.

Our new topic for this half term is Africa.

Important information:
PE is on a Thursday.
Swimming is on a Friday morning - don't forget your kit!
Spelling tests are on Friday morning.
Morpurgo poets
We have been looking at different types of poems.  Today we looked at cinquains.  We learnt about the features that cinquains have, and then we read some and decided what titles would be best for them.  Tomorrow we are going to write our own cinquains!
News news!
Morpurgo were news reporters today, broadcasting the exciting news about a Stone Age village, Skara Brae, found on an island off Scotland.
Creswell Crags!
We have had a fantastic day at Creswell Crags today.  We imagined we were a Stone Age tribe -  hunting reindeer with spears, building our own den to shelter in, and making our fire to cook our food over.  We learnt about different animals that were alive in the Stone Age, and looked at lots of animal bones and skeletons, and we even visited a cave where people lived.  Thank you to our leaders, Sarah and Jo, and to Mrs. Dilks and Mrs. Beverley for coming with us.
How to wash a woolly mammoth
Morpurgo have just begun to look at this wonderful book.  How would YOU wash a woolly mammoth?  What would you use?  Use your imagination and we can't wait to hear your fantastic ideas!
Comic strips!
We have been looking at the book "Ug" by Raymond Briggs.  It is set in the Stone Age and it is written in a comic style.  We have designed our own comic strips, inspired by when Ug asks his dad what the hunters are doing and why.
We've been having cricket coaching on a Thursday morning this half term. We're getting better and better each week.

Look at Jensen's Stone Age inspired axe!  Well done!

Cheerfest fun
Morpurgo had lots of fun at Cheerfest last week.  See what we got up to!
Freeze!
We enjoyed acting out different scenes from "Stone Age Boy".  Can you tell what scenes we have freeze framed?
Stone Age art
We have been looking at cave paintings from the Stone Age, and we recreated our own drawings.
We have been looking at the book "Stone Age Boy".  Today we looked at some words from the story, and then practised our thesaurus skills.
In our RE week, we have been exploring what happened on Good Friday.  We acted out the story, with Jesus, Pontius Pilate, Roman soldiers, Peter the disciple, and the criminals who were put on the crosses beside Jesus.
In the last few weeks, we have been practising different sketching skills, and today we used what we have learnt by sketching some daffodils.
Willow dome excitement in Morpurgo!
We have made our willow dome! We had great fun doing it and used our measuring skills  and strength to get it done. We have now written our own blogs about making it and you can log in to Purple Mash to see them. www.purplemash.com/sch/longstone

Getting ready!
Morpurgo have been thinking about our outdoor area, and we have decided that it is almost time to start building our own willow dome!  We have looked at a blog written by a family who made their own willow dome, and we have written some questions back about how to do it.  Have a look at the blog:
http://www.littletrekkers.co.uk/little-trekkers-ambassadors/ambassador-blog/item/making-our-willow-den.html

Please remember to bring in some wellies and clothes that you don't mind getting dirty (and even gardening gloves if you have any!), so that you are ready to get building!
Snow day activities - Fri 2nd March
Put on warm clothes, wellies, a hat and gloves; go outside and have fun. Make a snowman , sledge, make an angel. Laugh!!!!

And once you dry off, try something a bit different from this website.

Snow day activities - Thurs 1st March
Even though we’re not at school today, let’s celebrate World Book day by reading!

You could use one of your current reading books or any of your favourite books for the following:
  • Draw the main character and write a description of their personality, looks etc
  • Can you retell your chosen story/book in 5 sentences?                                   Here's an example for 'The Gruffalo':                                                                          Once there was a mouse. One day he took a walk through the woods while tricking animals into not eating him because he was meeting a Gruffalo. Without warning, an actual real Gruffalo caught him and was going to eat him. Luckily the mouse tricked the Gruffalo into thinking the other animals were scared of him and the Gruffalo ran away. At long last, the mouse sat calmly and ate a nut, safe from everyone.
  • Choose a moment in the book and write a diary entry pretending to be one of the characters. Make sure you include how the character is feeling.

Other than fiction books, what other reading could you do today? Here are some ideas, can you think of more?
  • Information on  your cereal packet
  • A recipe in a cookbook- maybe you could help in the kitchen today!
  • An online weather forecast for your area
  • The instructions for a card or board game- can you explain the game to others?
  • Search for and read information about St David’s day
Dance festival
The dance festaival has been postponed - We will let you know more once a new date has been confirmed.
Textures and effects
In Art we have been learning about how to make different effects and textures with just one pencil!  See us in action today.
Safer Internet Day 2018
We have been learning all about how to stay safe online today.  We started off the day dressing up and posing in Morpurgo's photo booth.  Why do you think we did this?
We designed our own jigsaw pieces with our pledge of how to make the internet safe - here we are!
The Taj Mahal
Morpurgo have been looking closely at the Taj Mahal.  We have used different adjectives to describe it, and there has been lots of talk about it being symmetrical!  Have a look at us during our art lessons.
Homophone fun!
We have been thinking about homophones (do you know what a homophone is?  Clue - son and sun).  We even made up our own games practising lots of different homophones.
What is precious to us?
We have been thinking about our families and homes, and we have drawn some pictures of those most precious to us to send to the Gambia next month.
The the past week, Morpurgo class have been working very hard writing a story based on the Indian story The Raja's Big Ears. Today they were storytellers and read their stories to Dahl class. They used lots of expression and Dahl class were very entertained.
Measuring!
Morpurgo had lots of fun today estimating and measuring different lengths around the classroom.  We used multi-link cubes, rulers and the meter stick.  We even measured Mrs. Dilks!  Guess how tall she is?  Some of us also converted different units of measurements - mm, cm, m and km.
Numbers numbers numbers
Morpurgo enjoyed playing the loop game using our number knowledge!  We thought about number sequences, times tables, number patterns and lots more.  See us paying close attention to the game.
Computing fun!
We are learning word processing skills in our computing lessons this half term. Any additional practice at home at formatting fonts, inserting images and text boxes would be fantastic. If you want to become more confident at typing, have a go at dance mat typing. Enjoy!
We have had a fun-filled last few days!  Have a look at us enjoying our class party! A big thank you to everyone for all the yummy food and drink that was brought in!
Monday 18th December - Morpurgo's class party.  Please see information in your child's book bag in the coming days for information.
Thank you to everyone who came and helped on Decoration Day!  We hope you enjoyed it as much as we did!
We are really looking forward to our pantomime of Cinderella Rockerfella.  See you in the school hall for our performances!
KS2 performances of Cinderella Rockerfella:

Hollywood beckons!

We all really enjoyed watching Lucas acting in CBeebies' Biggleton!  We think he did a great job acting in "Freezegirl".  Well done Lucas! Click here to watch the episode.

Friend or foe?

We have been reading the story "Friend or foe" by Michael Morpurgo.  The two main characters are David and Tucky.  We have been thinking about how the characters feel during the story, and we made a "conscience alley" where David (George) and Tucky (Lila) have to decide whether to help the lost pilots or not. What do you think our decision was?

Picture
Our Topic is World War 2.  Have you got any artefacts or books that could help us learn about this fascinating period of history?

Here is Lucas with an old train lamp from WW2!  Thank you also to Jensen for bringing in an old gas mask!

Thank you to George for bringing in some photos, medals, badges and buttons belonging to his great grandfather in WW2.
Do you know any facts about WW2?
  1. When did the war start?
  2. Who was the leader of Germany?
  3. What was rationing?
  4. Can you explain what "invade" means?
  5. Why were some children evacuated?
  6. When did the war end?
Thank you to Henry for bringing in a selection of WW2 badges in from his dad's collection, and to Lila for bringing in some WW2 medals and some letters written by her great grandfather  in the war.
Improving our maths skills!
Morpurgo have been working hard over the last few weeks to improve their addition strategies.  We have been using our knowledge of place value to work out sums using column addition.
In our RE week, we are learning about the Trinity.  So far we have looked at the baptism of Jesus, discussing similarities and differences between 2 famous paintings of His baptism, and how the Trinity is portrayed.  Here are some photos, showing us on our RE week journey!

Starry night
Look at our wonderful works of art!

Picture
Morpurgo have been creating their own Starry Night pictures, inspired by van Gogh's work of art.  We have used different mediums.  Can you spot what we have used?
Tuesday 26th September
In Morpurgo class we have been writing our own poems about Vincent van Gogh. Here we are, hard at work, using the laptops to publish our poetry.
This is one we wrote together about an animal that van Gogh painted - can you guess what it is?

Who made your beating wings metallic brown
Like a shining conker?

Who made you glide through the pitch black sky
Like a fish in the air?

Who made you petrified of the burning yellow sun?

Why do you gobble disgusting, rotten flesh
Like a shovel digging in the dirt?

If you could talk what would you ask me?

CONGRATULATIONS to our new School Councillor representatives from Morpurgo class - Charlie and Annabel!

We have been planting bulbs all around school today.  Morpurgo planted ours in our garden.  We can't wait till spring to see them grow! Thank you to FOLS and all our parent helpers!

Do you do Lexia? Here is Jensen working hard on Lexia at school.

We are looking forward to seeing lots of you tomorrow (Wed. 20th September) in Morpurgo's classroom at either 3.30pm or 5.30pm for a chance to find out more about what happens during the school day, and lots more information!

Can you spare an hour a week to help in our class? We would welcome any offers of help!
