Welcome to Morpurgo Class' page. The class teacher is Mrs Crease and the teaching assistant is Mrs Dilks. We currently have 25 children in class across Y3, 4 and 5. Have a look below to see all the fabulous work the children have produced this year and to keep up-to-date with all the latest class information.
Summer 2Class Read:A FarewellOn the last day of term, we said a fond farewell to Mrs Dilks, who has worked at Longstone School for 28 years. She is the essence of Longstone School and we will kiss her dearly. We wish her all the best for her retirement and we look forward to seeing her soon.
Thank you Mrs Dilks for everything you have done for our class. You made this year very special. Sports Day 2021We all had great fun during our Sports Day this year. Haddon were the winners but well done to everyone, who took part and attended.
We also were lucky enough to have a medal ceremony, where all the children’s medals and certificates were presented by Mrs Dilks.
Ancient Greeks incl. The OlympicsOur topic this half term is titled ‘Ancient Greeks.’ We will be exploring: where Greece is on a map, as well as other countries taking part in the olympics; we will look at how the olympics started many years ago; we will explore a range of Greek myths and we will create our own Greek vases, amongst many other things. However, to kick-start our topic, we are going to immerse ourselves in Ancient Greece, by coming dressed in togas and enjoying Ancient Greek inspired food. Keep visiting our class page to see all our lovely learning this half term.
ScienceDuring our Science lesson, the children in Morpurgo made blood models using Cheerios, marshmallows, raisins and food colouring. They had great fun getting messy but they worked really hard using the vocabulary: red blood cell, white blood cell, plasma and platelets. Have a look at our models below.
Greek Vases
Samba GrooveThis half term, the class are learning different samba rhythms to link to the opening ceremony of the Olympics. The children have learnt call and responses and they are practising layering different rhythms and different percussion instruments. Below is a short video of our very first attempt at a samba groove. Great effort Morpurgo!
Our final performance was at the KS2 Sports Day. The children were fantastic and have a look at our video of our mini opening ceremony!
Talk for WritingWe love acting out our text map, which helps us learn to retell a story. Here are some of our actions to retell a sentence or two from the text.
Alexander the Great Poem by Paul PerroThe children in Morpurgo learnt this poem off by heart and here are our initial performances.
Circulatory SystemWe are naming parts of the circulatory system this half term, so we acted out the system, whilst reporting what was happening in the body. See an example below. Can you guess who is the heart? Who are the blood cells? Who is the lungs?
Ancient Greece Fact FindingChildren shared their own questions, that they had about Ancient Greece and they used research to find the answers. We spoke about ensuring information is reliable before using it.
Ancient Greece DayMorpurgo had a fabulous day immersing themselves in our new Ancient Greece topic. They dressed up in togas and wreaths; tried Greek cuisine; created Trojan horses and labyrinths and much more. Please browse our photos below to see all the fun.
Summer 1RE WeekOur RE week was focussed around what religions tell us about right and wrong. We focussed on the ten commandments from Christianity, dharma from Hinduism and the four commands from Sikhism. Morpurgo class created their own ten commandments and they described their relative's dharmas. Here is some of the work they produced.
We also took part in a competition to produce a piece of work based on the question ‘Where is God?’
Cinquain PoemsMorpurgo had a go this week at creating cinquain poems - a poem, where each line has a different amount of syllables (pattern 2, 4, 6, 8, 2). We tried to link some of them to our RE week.
Our class poem is: The Cross, Holy, death, life, Praying, standing, loving, The cross is a sign of power, The cross By Morpurgo Class Owl Pellet InvestigationThe children in Morpurgo were so excited to dissect an owl pellet. We were really lucky that one of our class members brought some in to share. Look at the class’ fascinating finds below!
Wild Week - The Great Local Outdoors! The week beginning 17th May was our yearly ‘Wild Week.’ We took part in lots of fun activities and trips out to help us explore our local environment. The children in Morpurgo enjoyed visiting Thornbridge Gardens and Thornbridge Outdoors, as well as making compasses; designing and building zip wire buggies; going on a treasure hunt; following a sensory string walk; decorating pebbles for our class garden and creating garden birds and papier-mâché butterflies. Not forgetting a fabulous visit from the Mountain Rescue Team. What an exciting and laughter-filled week we had!

Design and TechnologyThe children in Morpurgo have researched, designed and planned a puppet, after watching a Punch and Judy show. They have just started to sew their fabrics. Mrs Dilks and I are so impressed with the children’s sewing.
Sports EventThe children in Morpurgo were really lucky to take part in a sports event on Thursday 13th May. They took part in netball and breakdancing and there was lots of laughter and smiles during the afternoon.
ComputingMorpurgo have been learning to code a video game this half term. Their task was to design and build a maze game, which they have worked really hard to do. Here are some photos showing them in action.
BreaktimeThe class have been playing a lovely game together during break times. I had to take this photo, as there were so many smiley faces.
The Lighthouse Poem by C J HeckMorpurgo have read and analysed ‘The Lighthouse’ a poem by C J Heck. They worked in teams to perform it. Here is our final performance:
Seaside BannersThe children in Morpurgo have created seaside pictures to make a beach hut in our reading corner. It is looking fabulous!
RocksThis half term, our science focus is 'Rocks and Soils.' To kickstart this, we made the three types of natural rocks using starbursts. The children particularly liked the part, where we heated the starburst to visualise an igneous rock.
Wellbeing WednesdaysOur 'Wellbeing Wednesdays' started well. Our focus was on 'connecting' and we spent our assembly slot playing snakes and ladders with our partner. What a fabulous time we spent connecting over a game!
Spring 2Last Week of Spring Term:During the last week of term, Morpurgo wrote Spring poems, created intricate Easter cards, designed a cross for our class reflection area and made handprint lilies.
Easter Egg HuntDigital Leaders Mrs. Gregory's Last Day
I would like to take this opportunity to express what a fantastic year I have had at Longstone Primary. We have all been challenged beyond anything we would have expected and have met it with resilience, fortitude and diligence. Since September, Morpurgo has been an absolute joy to teach and I will remember each and every one of them with great fondness - what a super set of children. I have uploaded many photographs on this site - cooking, space buggies, beautiful art work and Science experiments (which were very messy!) to name but a few. I know Mrs. Crease is looking forward to returning and she will be made to feel very welcome by all the children. Last but definitely not least I would like to extend a huge thank-you to Mrs. Dilks who has been absolutely amazing. She has a unique talent and the children love her! Today the children have enjoyed their last day with me and I hope you enjoy looking at these photos: RE WEEK
One of my favourite times of the school year is Easter. This week is RE week and we have been discussing the importance of Holy Week and the relevance it has to Christians across the world. To help the children understand the sequence of events leading up to the Resurrection, they were challenged to piece together, in a storyboard, the details of each day from Palm Sunday to Easter Monday. ART
In our Art lessons, we have studied the creative work of Claude Monet. The children have been experimenting with different pastels to create a similar effect he used for his fabulous landscapes.
I think you will agree that their work is rather special. |

The children have settled well and are working hard across all subjects. They are all thrilled to be back together with their friends and have enjoyed some lovely break times in the sun, laughing and playing well together - I am so pleased they are all back at school and life for them is 'back to normal'.
WELCOME BACK!!
It's so lovely to see the school back up and running! At last we can enjoy the rest of the Spring Term altogether with our friends.
Please take a look at a selection of our work from Lockdown. I think you'll agree we have all worked very hard and the standard of work has been exceptional.
SPRING TERM
Firstly, I want to say how pleased I am with all the work from Morpurgo Class which has been uploaded on SeeSaw. It gives me enormous pleasure seeing the variety and excellent standard you are all achieving.
It is a very difficult time for all of us and I look forward to a change as soon as possible.
Here is the weekly timetable for week 4 starting on 25th January.
Longstone School is now using Google Classrooms to give the teachers an opportunity to interact with you all on-line.
There are 2 daily sessions used as a check-in and welcome time for us all. These are scheduled at 9.10 in the morning and 1.10 in the afternoon. Don't worry if you can't come to both - you may be outside doing PE or some other activity.
The other Google sessions are for each Year group to access a teaching session - these are outlined on the timetable.
The daily lessons are similar to what we have been doing all year - it is your choice how you manage the order - you may prefer to complete the English task first for example.
If you have any questions - message me on SeeSaw.

RE Week - Religious Festivals around the world
On Monday, we learnt about the importance of the Jewish
Festival, HANNUKAH.
.
The children created a picture of the Menorah - the
beautiful, ornate candleabras
with 8 separate candle holders to represent the 8 days of the festival.
The ninth candle in the middle is used to light the other candles each day.
SPACE DAY
The children had planned and sketched a Mars Buggy that embraced all the criteria needed for a buggy to travel on the Mars Planet landscape. We discussed solar panels, weight distribution and appropriate tyres and wheels to tackle the dusty and bumpy terrain.
Last Wednesday the children took the whole day to make their model .
The results were absolutely amazing and I was particularly impressed with the detail and design of the models.
Remembrance Day
Morpurgo Class have been remembering the brave soldiers who have lost their lives due to war.
To commemorate this solemn day, the children painted a 'Poppy Stone' to place at the Great Longstone Memorial. On Wednesday the children walked to the monument and placed their stones in the peace garden surrounding the statue.
We all then reflected on the event during the 2 minute silence. As luck would have it, there was a couple standing with us who had completed service in Iraq and Bosnia. The children were interested in their medals and they were only too pleased to chat to the class.
The photos show what a special event it turned out to be!
AUTUMN 2
Welcome back to probably the busiest half term of the year! The children have returned to school with vigour and anticipation.
This week we have been discussing Bonfire Night. The children have been composing a Bonfire Night poem and their skill at writing in rhyming couplets is amazing! I will upload some of their poems soon.
This afternoon we have been making Bonfire Night collages. With glue, paper, pastels, coloured paper, scissors and foil, there was a very creative yet messy classroom. Their Artwork is now displayed in the corridor and in the classroom:

Hello and welcome to the Morpurgo Web page.
The Autumn term is well under way and the children have settled very well. We are very aware that most of the class have been out of school since March and our main focus for the first couple of weeks has been to settle them back to the normal school routine. All the children are now working diligently and enjoying playing with their friends within their bubble.
COOKING! The children have been learning about the harvest crops and how they are used for our food. To enhance their learning, we have used practical lessons to understand how the link between farm and plate is made. They were eager to bake some scones, using their knowledge of where the ingredients come from and how they are used in our diet. The photos show the fun they had making fruit and cheese scones. I hope you enjoy them at home! |

Maths
During the beginning of the Autumn term we will be focusing on Place Value, followed by Addition and Subtraction.
Most Fridays, we will be enjoying a Maths Games lesson where the children can enhance their numeracy skills while having some fun!
English
To begin the start of term, we will be studying the book, Where We Are by Oliver Jeffers. The children have already each created a fabulous poem/song in the style of What a Wonderful World by Louis Armstrong - I literally had tears in my eyes as the children performed their compositions!

Fabulous Artwork!
We have been studying the techniques of Van Gogh - the hues and tints, the paintbrush strokes and the subject matter.
The children focused closely on the Sunflower formation and structure and created some excellent paintings.
