Summer 2

Funny Bones

For our last half term this year, we are exploring the exciting topic ‘Funny Bones’, which is all about the human body. We will investigate how our bodies work; name parts of our skeleton and write explanation texts to showcase our learning.

Art and Design: Photography

The children in Morpurgo learnt about different photo shots and they then tried them out. The children then edited the photos using different filters. I think we have found some natural photographers. What do you think?

Science: The Digestive System

Morpurgo class investigated the digestive system by making poo using orange juice, banana and biscuits. The children used a plastic bag as the stomach and tights as the intestines. There were lots of smiles and laughter around the classroom.

Good Luck Mr Ford!

This half term, we have said good bye to Mr Ford (our student teacher), who is about to finish his teaching degree. We were really lucky to have the opportunity to work with Mr Ford and the children especially loved his teaching. Well done Mr Ford and we hope to hear from you soon!

Science - Skeleton and Organs

We kickstarted our topic by drawing around ourselves and labelling the key organs on our body maps. We also created skeleton pictures and we labelled them with the different bone names.

Summer 1

The Platinum Jubilee

We had a fantastic day celebrating the Jubilee as a class and school. We created rhyming poems for the Queen; we made flags and crowns, as well as enjoying a family picnic on a lovely sunny afternoon.

Morpurgo's Well Dressing Designs

We are delighted to be taking part in the well dressing again this year. The theme for the design is Ukraine and peace. The children created some wonderfully thought-provoking designs, which will be incorporated into the final design.

Wild Week

In May, we had our annual 'Wild Week', whilst the Y5s went on their residential. Morpurgo had fun making giant art attacks; creating leaf imprint coasters; pond dipping; threading leaf mobiles and building papier-mâché garden birds. Take a look at all the fun below.

Life in the Stone Age

During the first half of the Summer term, we dived into life in the Stone Age. We explored how people lived in this era by researching the development of tools during this time and the development of bronze. Morpurgo class created a large mural inspired by cave paintings and they learnt how evolution played its part in human development. This was an eye-opening topic!

Science Club

Y3 and Y4 were invited to join our science club this half term. They have had enormous fun taking part in different experiments, whilst learning to use different scientific vocabulary.

History - Researching Stone Age Houses

Morpurgo were lucky enough to explore models of different Stone Age houses and they investigated to find out what order the houses were built in.

Hook Lesson - The Stone Age

To kickstart our topic, the children in Morpurgo made bone necklaces using salt dough and they designed their own Stone Age drawings using natural resources. They also explored the story 'Stone Age Boy' and they created a comic strip to summarise the story. We are really looking forward to learning more about The Stone Age this half term.

Home Links: We had a few children, who decided to take their topic learning home and they made replica tools from The Stone Age. Well done boys - I love the enthusiasm!

LEAP Reading Café: Some children from Morpurgo were invited to the community reading café in the village hall. They enjoyed having time to read; swap books; read to Longstone residents  and not to mention, a couple of biscuits and a glass of squash! What could be better? Reading and biscuits!

In Spring 2 term, we explored everything about India, in particularly, we compared the geographical features of India to the UK. Morpurgo tasted a range of Indian cuisine and then created some of the dishes themselves. We experienced an Indian dance and music workshop, as well listened to Rudyard Kipling's 'Just So' stories. This was a very vibrant topic!

Outdoor Learning

We have made the most of the sunshine this half term by moving some of our learning outdoors. The children have enjoyed reading, calculating and exploring sound outside. What a difference the sunshine makes!

Design and Technology: Indian Flatbreads and Curry

Morpurgo class have been weighing and mixing ingredients to form flatbreads. They then fried the breads, learning how to control the temperature of a hob.

Music: Wider Opportunities - Clarinet

For 15 weeks through the Spring and Summer terms, Morpurgo will be learning the clarinet. Our first few sessions have been based on learning rhythms; following notation and clapping beats. The children really enjoyed learning how to put their clarinet together and making their first sound using the reed.

Welcome back! I hope you all had a relaxing festive break and I am really excited to get back into the routine of learning with you all in 2022.

Spring 1 topic was titled 'Wild Weather' and you guessed it, we explored all types of weather, as well as the impact global warming is having on Earth. We researched and named different types of weather from across the world but especially, those experienced in the UK. We also questioned what impact global warming is having on our seasons, as well as using this to inspire our writing. As well as this, we measured different types of weather using our very own weather stations! Below is some of the fabulous work from Spring 1.

Weather Measuring Equipment

The class had fun designing, building and trialling their own weather measuring equipment. They designed rain gauges, barometers, anemometers and wind vanes. After using the in the garden area, they discussed ways they would improve the designs, if they were to make them again.

Digital Weather Composing

This half term, the children had fun composing their own pieces of music using Chrome Music Lab. We linked their compositions to our topic of weather and the children had fun thinking about the timbre, texture and pitch of their chosen piece of weather.

Water Cycle

This half term, we have been exploring the water cycle as part of Geography and Science. The children drew the water cycle and they then worked in groups to create their own mock water cycle in a bag. We are hoping to see the process of evaporation and condensation, as the bag heats up.

Mr Ford

Until June, we have a PGCE student, Mr Ford, working with us in Morpurgo. He will be observing and learning from class teachers before leading sessions with the children. He has already settled in well and the children are enjoying having him here. I wish him all the best with his training and I'm sure he will have chance to meet you all soon. He has written a message for you all, which you can see below.

Snow Day at School

We all love a snow day and this inspired some wintry poetry and artwork in our class.

Parish Christmas Card Designs

The children in Morpurgo class have designed a Christmas picture for a competition to have their picture on the parish Christmas service list. Our inspiration was a stained glass window and I am really pleased with the finished designs.
