INTENT
At Longstone Primary School the PE Curriculum has been designed so that our pupils develop their knowledge, skills and vocabulary through structured and memorable experiences.  Their positive attitudes towards PE are nurtured, enabling them to develop a curiosity of PE around them; igniting an interest in PE and sporting experiences and allowing their sporting talents to shine.  Our pupils demonstrate determination and resilience to practise skills within a wide range of different activities and situations both independently and collaboratively and apply these skills to achieve improving levels of performance.  The curriculum intends to ensure that all pupils develop competence in a broad range of physical activities, are physically active for sustained periods of time (such as lunchtimes, breaks and after school).  They engage in competitive sports and activities and are positively encouraged and inspired to lead a physically fit and healthy lifestyle and recognise the lifelong benefits to themselves.
IMPLEMENTATION
Our pupils develop the ability to take the initiative, lead, organise and officiate and instil good sporting attitudes in themselves and others.  Pupils discover how to improve their own and others’ performances and when evaluating performance, pupils’ curiosity is fostered through encouragement to consider ways of improving their skills.
Pupils take part in swimming lessons, enabling them to swim at least 25m before leaving Longstone Primary School, and know how to remain safe in and around water.
Pupils discover the importance of exercise in promoting long-term health and emotional well-being.

At Longstone, we promote pupils’ SMSC development through physical education in the following ways:
  • We develop competence to practise skills within a wide range of different activities and situations.
  • We are physically active for sustained periods of time.
  • We engage in competitive sports and activities.
  • We are inspired to lead healthy, active lives and recognise the importance of exercise in promoting long-term health and emotional well-being.
  • We encourage pupils to evaluate their own and other’s performances and from this make improvements.
  • We promote fair play and team work in lessons and in external competitions and encourage good sportsmanship throughout.
  • We encourage students to recognise and respect social differences and similarities.
  • We interact with the school and external communities through clubs and competitions.
