Hello from Mr Raybould!Hello and welcome to the Rowling Class webpage!
This is the second half of the Summer Term! I'm really looking forward to this due to the fact that we have our excellent summer play to prepare, learn, rehearse and perform! WIND IN THE WILLOWS by Kenneth Grahame We also have a new topic - The Ancient Greeks - that will involve a lot of history, writing, art and music. As always, children will have new spellings to learn (see below), times tables to practice on Times Table Rockstars, and will need to continue reading the books that they love. The second half of the term will be no different: well-being and mindfulness will continue to be at the forefront of our life in the classroom.
Our topic this half-term is OUT OF THIS WORLD and, in science, we have been looking at the Earth, the Sun and the Moon as well as the other planets in the Solar System. Computing will be about programming a Scratch game where the main character has to avoid "Space Junk." Our writing has focussed on a narrative story that involves sci-fi (which I'm now looking forward to reading!) as well as writing a biography about a famous astronaut. Maths will round off our work on multiplication and division which will lead into several weeks focussing on fractions. So far we have looked at equivalent fractions as well as switching between mixed numbers and improper fractions. Finally, Art this half-term will concentrate on an abstract artist named Peter Thorpe who uses space and rockets as a main theme for his paintings. PE is on Tuesdays and Thursday - remember to come to school already in PE kit. You can follow Mr Raybould on Twitter for snippets of what's been happening in class. |

Writing:
For the second half of the Summer Term, we will firstly be writing portal (time-travel) stories. The main focus is to look at how we can use figurative language (simile, metaphor, alliteration, onomatopoeia and personification) to describe settings and characters. Spellings: Each week, we will look at a new spelling rule (e.g. 'shuhs' words spelt -cious) or a collection of words (e.g. ambitious adjectives). In class, we will complete activities on those words. Spellings can be practiced in a whole variety of ways which can be found on the button opposite. We also use Spelling Shed which can be found at the link above - new weekly spellings will go live on a Friday evening. Spelling assessments are on Fridays. |
This week's spelling rules:
Year 5: Unstressed vowels in polysyllabic words Year 6: Synonyms and Antonyms |
Maths
Nearly every day, we will practice times tables using a paper based version of Times Tables Rock Stars (link above). The times tables that children practice will be personalised to them based on their progress. Children can practice at home using the web or app based versions.
Maths for the Summer Term will focus on embedding prior knowledge based on the four operations as well as looking at 2D and 3D shapes, angles, volume, capacity and coordinates.

Children were presented with a set of reflective stickers, key-fobs and a snap-band to help them to be more visible as the nights come drawing in. Thank you to PSCO Anthony Boswell for the road safety gifts.
