Spellings

Picture
Spelling Shed Website
Spellings are taught from Reception onwards. In Reception, spellings are taught, when children have a good command of Read Write Inc set 1 phonic sounds. Their spellings link to the sound they are learning during the week.

In KS1, children, who receive daily phonics teaching, learn spellings which incorporate their weekly phonic sound. Once children have a secure grasp of all the phonic sounds, they begin to learn spellings, which follow the spelling patterns from the National Curriculum.

As a school, we use the Spelling Shed Programme to teach the spelling patterns in a progressive order. Children are tested weekly on ten spelling words, which are a mix from a spelling pattern and statutory words.

Some children may need extra support with their spellings and we use an approach called 'Action Words'. These help children learn to read and spell using sight words. If children are learning 'Action Words', they will only have five spelling words to learn a week.
